A note on impact measurements…
Plant-based options within each category vary in their environmental impact. Among plant-based milks, for example, almond milk requires more water to produce than pea milk—both of which require less than dairy milk (see here and here). To keep things simple, we calculate these options’ unique impacts and highlight a cumulative stat: gallons water conserved 🌊

We take this approach for other categories, too. And if some plant-based alternatives are actually less environmentally friendly, we point that out. We want to be as objective and thorough as possible (and certainly avoid greenwashing) — without losing the forest for the trees.

A few more notes…
☝ While plant-based options are better in many ways, we can’t assume they’re better in every way. We must be informed shoppers, eaters, and advocates.

Take plant milk, for instance. It’s better for the planet than dairy milk—but doesn’t always provide the same nutritional benefits. Nut milks, for example, often have very little protein. (Thankfully, there are plenty of other plant protein sources! 💪) But then there’s pea milk, which contains as much protein as dairy milk and more calcium! Again, we shouldn’t lose the forest for the trees but we should be thoughtful in our plant-based eating efforts.

🐮 The animal agriculture industry operates the way it does to provide the quantity of meat we demand at the prices we expect. But we can change things by simply eating fewer animals and more plants! (Worried about protein? Check this out…)
